When we first herd about Sea of Thieves we could not wait for it to arrive! But now after having had a few weeks pirating we can finally give our verdict. In a nut shell or perhaps a grog barrel Sea of Thieves is an action and adventure pirate game set in an vast open world. There is no real solid story other then for those wishing to live out their pirate dreams by plundering booty and setting sail across the deadly seas to explore a map filled with forts, outposts and other hidden gems!
Missions come in the form of fetch and gather, finding buried treasure and hunting down dangerous foes! Your even free to generally wreak havoc against fellow players in not just an open world but a shared world that you can team up with fellow pirates to make crews of 2-4. This allows you to take control of a smaller 2 person pirate ships or a much larger 4 person galleon! As such the game is built on this risk vs. reward system which in turn makes it easier to unlock goodies for your character or your pirate ship ranging from new sails and ornaments to eye patches, peg legs and new weapons to personalise your pirate. As your pirate reputation grows you are able to unlock more engaging puzzles that are far more complex and challenging then the starter missions but again offer more loot!
However one of Sea of Thieves biggest and most impressive features is its unique game play mechanics where by players must control nearly aspect of their ship like setting the sail, raising the anchor not to mention constantly having to check both map and compass in order to make sure you are on the right heading. This manual and almost bare bones approach makes getting from point A to point B not as simple as it seems. Add in brutal storms, roaming adversaries and creatures of the deep make sure there is plenty to do to keep you on your toes. Then there is the animated art style that is nothing short of stunning! In fact one of our favourite things to do in Sea of Thieves is to just sail off into the sunset during calmer seas and take in the world in its entire eye hurting glory! In game screen shot!
While fun Sea of Thieves is a game best enjoyed with friends, which is fine if you have lots of swash buckling chummies ready to set sail and stare the danger of the seven seas dead in the face! However if you’re a single pirate wandering the seas alone then you might not get the full experience Sea of Thieves has to offer. With no single player story or NPS’s to aid you in sailing your galleon it would be very hard pressed to captain anything other than one of the smaller vessels and with a game that is heavy based on the concept of taking huge risks to reap even bigger rewards that may prove difficult to do solo.
Final Thoughts
Seas of Thieves is a game that is enjoyable to play and even more so to look at but with the lack of more diverse missions the biggest hiccup maybe keeping players hooked for the long term. Having said that if your looking for a adventure on the high seas that can be both fun and relaxing then Sea of Thieves is defiantly worth checking especially if your looking for a game to release your inner pirate!
